I mean, one of the great successes of the Democratic Party in the US has been that it has been perceived as the party of the Common Man, but once you scratch the surface it’s easy to find the aloof contempt that the party’s elite has towards the Common Man’s beliefs and values.

For 100 points, compare and contrast. It’s Speaker’s Corner time. How can a party claim to represent the Common Man whilst being so at odds with his values?

Let's take teddy kennedy for exampLe (a homeboy); he cLaims to be for the peopLe, more specificaLLy, the downtrodden. it's aLL hogwash. he does nothing. sure, he hoLds raLLies once in a whiLe, and stands beside a few prominent minorities, but when you "scratch beLow the surface" you see he has done nothing. he hasn't sponsored a meaningfuL biLL in 2 decades. he's biggest accompLishment is putting a bLonde in the pond.

i know that didn't touch on your question, i just need to get some anti-kennedy rhetoric off my chest once in a whiLe.

by the common man, and the area between the coasts, i take it you're referring to "middLe-america" or the midwest (we caLL it aLL midwest). i reaLLy don't see the democratic party ignoring their vaLues or beLiefs; if they don't vote democratic, then they're not addressed, sure... but the same can be said about the repubLican party. now, the common man's vaLues... by common man, i assume you are referring to the majority of america. the majority of america is uneducated white trash, hence the immense popuLarity of nascar and country music. the common vaLues incLude attending tent revivaLs, and pouring their money to evangeLists. the common man sports a mustache, and teases his muLLet. the common man keeps aLive the kkk. the common man sees graduating high schooL is a huge accompLishment.

so yes, the democratic party is not the common man's party. it's the yuppy party, the voLvo-driving, butch-cut, soccer mom's party. it's the party of peopLe are educated, and weLL to do, so they have ampLe time to worry about probLems such as the environment, and animaL testing.

the repubLican party i'd say is more in Line with the common man. it is aLL a farce.

and just so you know, i am not a democrat (nor repubLican)... i used to be uLtra-conservative, or at Least anti-kennedy. i'm stiLL anti-kennedy.. but many additions to my Life have Loosened my firm conservative beLiefs (i used to Love newt gingrich).
