As had been scheduled Lady Samantha then set me to work on the housework.
She had written "dusting, hoovering, cleaning up and mopping" on my schedule but i didn't realise how high her standards are (or perhaps how low my standards as an inferior male are!). i had also thought that She had meant those four tasks as a general instruction to clean the premises, but realised when She came to check on my progress that She meant that each of them be done completely!
i started on a pile of dirty glasses and cups in the sink and with energy and possibly a wasteful amount of Fairy (i got more confident about using a bit less as i washed more of them) dug into them. i wanted to get them done quickly but well, as i knew i was under time pressure. But i didn't want to do them too quickly and leave them filthy, soapy or too wet.
i then prepared the light snack for Her as outlined in my schedule. An apple sliced into small pieces, two spoons of yoghurt and a glass of ice cold water. i made the mistake of forgetting to put away the knife and i think also the yoghurt container in my haste to get on with the other chores. This mistake among others Lady Samantha noted at the end of the allotted time.
As i looked around i initially thought the premises were clean, relative to what i am used to and that the required cleaning would be little. But when Lady Samantha came downstairs to check on my progress, and warned me that there was still much to do, only then did i notice the small pieces of dirt on the floor of Her divine premises.
On to "dusting". i thought what this meant was having a little dustpan and collecting dirt into it. But as Lady Samantha patiently explained to me it is more traditionally done using a cloth, applying solution to it and wiping various surfaces. i went about this task gingerly, i was not sure which surfaces were appropriate to apply the cloth and solution to and feared damaging any of Lady Samantha's divine furniture.
An additional task: cleaning of a metal cage. i took a sponge and started scraping. Lady Samantha inspected my efforts and noted that rust remained and instructed me to do it again, this time with a metal mesh scraper or clogger. i energetically applied myself to this task and think i got most of the rust out. i also cleaned the bars of the cage with sponge and solution and slowed myself by leaving suds on which i had to spend time wiping off.
"Hoovering" - in all Lady Samantha required me to hoover the stairs, the kitchen, the living room and Her office. This i did with energy but in my haste i missed an area or two and possibly didn't get all the dirt out of all areas that i had hoovered. She inspected everything, and noted that a rug looked like it hadn't been hoovered at all, although i had made an effort on it. On hands and knees i showed to Mistress that i had even tried to take the dirt out of the rug by hand but that it would not go without risking damage to the rug.
"Mopping" - i was not sure what mopping would do for the kitchen area, as i thought it was clean after i had hoovered, and i wondered whether i had misunderstood Lady Samantha and should have mopped the kitchen and other non-carpetted areas only and hoovered the rest. i took the mop out and began work, and realised late that the water in the mop was filthy. A properly trained inferior male would have replaced the water and soap immediately before beginning, but it did not occur immediately to a pathetic one such as i. As a result i had to do it again. i also realised i was leaving too much wetness on the floor and again had to push the mop in harder in the bucket for a drier mop and correct my subsequent earlier effort. After these stumbles i don't think the end result was too good.
Missing The Bell - i knew by heart that i was to bring Lady Samantha Her refreshments, either redbush tea or cold water, if i heard Her bell. So focused was i on my struggles with the housework that i missed Her bell, which she punished me for with whacks of a wooden spoon as i lay in "Position B", on all fours rump presented. i winced and shook my head afterward, not that the wooden spoon hurt all that much but more feeling the pain and frustration in my heart that i let Lady Samantha down.
Numerous Incompetencies - through the course of the day, numerous of my inadequacies were exposed, some of which made Lady Samantha laugh with amusement but which i feared would lead to my failure on the day. i had not realised how ignorant i was of many simple tasks, and sometimes shook my head with disappointment and frustration at myself. Lady Samantha would punish these mistakes either by a whack to the side of the head or with the wooden spoon to my rump.
