Is it possible to slightly increase the maximum file size for jpeg attatchments? I had a couple of pictures I wanted to upload on the "Favorite Picture Ever" thread but they were too big.
I could have reduced their size but that would have meant reducing their quality. Although I don't think many people on the forum would have minded very much, but I don't it would have been fair to the company that produced them. I think if you are going to take the liberty of posting one of their pictures that otherwise people would have to pay them to see, you shouldn't give a misleading impression of the quality of their product.
The 1600x1063 resolution and were only slightly over. They were 245KB and I think the limit was 241KB. However I have seen some companies that are producing pictures at 1600x1200 so it might be better to put the limit up to about 300KB just to be on the safe side.

Thanks Lantern, that's useful to know, although, I still think it would be better to put the limit up, if it's possible to do that.

This is a matter for John to decide...I'll draw it to his attention.

I haven't had a reply to this yet so I'm bumping it up to the front page again. Hopefully John will see it soon.

What with all the time John already had to spend lately to
1) buy and get the new servers in place for the forum
2) reload all the old material/user info for the forum
3) fiddle around with the servers when folks were getting error messages
it's a bit much asking him to spend even more of his free time doing something when it could take you 1 minute to just resize your pictures or post it on the free image places.
sheesh

I’m not asking John just so I can post those two pictures.
I’m asking because I think where the limit is set at, at the moment is inconvenient to anyone who wants to post high resolution pictures. At the moment you have this slightly peculiar situation where can post about 80% of pictures with resolution 1600x1063, but not the other 20%. If you it was just fractionally higher then you upload any picture at that resolution. I think I probably will post more pictures at this resolution in future. The ones I managed to post on the “My Best Pictures Ever” thread seemed very well received. However, it’s not purely for my benefit that I would like the limit changed, but because I think the board would better for everyone, if the limit was slightly higher.
I already explained in my original post why I don’t think it is fair to the company who made them to resize the pictures.
It’s true that people who want to post pictures like this, can put them on a free image server. However, it is fiddly to do. People might not think to do it. I know I didn’t when I wanted to post some. In addition, they wouldn’t get the thumbnails appearing in their post. I don’t think this is nearly as good as increasing the limit.
I don’t know how much work is involved in changing the limit. It could just be a matter of changing a setting that might literally take him a few seconds. However, if it is too difficult or he has some other reason for not wanting to do it, I’m sure John can tell me himself.
Although I don’t see myself uploading any 1600x1200 in the near future, I think it would also be nice if someone who wanted to was able to do it, as they seem to be becoming more common these days. I think this could also be achieved with a fairly modest increase to the file size limit, but once again that is up to John to decide.

Dibble, could you send me the pictures to my email address?
I'll see what I can do with them.
My email is thelantern(at)surfanytime.net

Thanks for the offer, Latern but I don't have two specific pictures that I want to post, right now. I think my first post must have been badly worded because every seems to have got the wrong end of the stick.
There were two pictures which I wanted to post in the "Your Best Picture Ever" thread. However, the thread is over now and I'm not really bothered anymore. They weren't my best ever pictures anyway. Somebody said they liked the ones I originally posted so much, that they asked me to post some more and they are ones I would have posted in response but I posted some others anyway.
What I was hoping John would do is set it up so I could post pictures like those ones in future. Not just for me, but for anyone who wanted to post pictures of that size.

I've been looking into this a bit more and I think it's not quite as straightforward as I made out in my first post, which was based on trying to upload 11 files.
I've looked at more of the 1600x1063 pictures on my hard disk and it seems that the file size varies more than I thought they did. The biggest one I saw was 465KB. These all came from same company which you would imagine would use similar levels of compression for all their pictures.
So even if the limit was increased to 300KB, you still wouldn't be able to upload any 1600x1063 file. To do that you would have to increase it to about 475KB and presumably to be able to upload any 1600x1200 picture it would have to go even higher to about 550KB.
Personally, I would still like to see limit increased, but I realize it's not such a small thing to ask for anymore.
Administrators are looking at this issue now, Dibble...
You make an interesting point...As producers are continuing to produce better quality High Res pics, MDFF should try - if possible - to be able to accommodate them - so that our members can share them.
But, there may be tech issues - or bandwidth issues....
A decision will be made asap...

Dribble....
The answer is no change to the upload limits...
High Res pics can easily be re-sized, without loss of quality....just look, for example, at Marco's pics....great quality - and sized within MDFF limits...
...Work on a good re-size process....:)

Erm, it's Dibble actually, not Dribble. There's no need to get personal about this, mate.

I don't agree with you that pictures can be reduced without loss of quality. The picture resolution make a huge difference to some of us. I admit you have to have a reasonably good monitor to appreciate that difference. However, if you do have a good monitor, the difference is quite astounding. It's like the difference between HDTV and normal TV. Even if you had a perfect re-size process, the quality of picture would be lower just because the picture was smaller. So I still think it's unfair to companies to that make the effort to produce larger pictures to have to resize them, so that people can’t see how good they are.
Marco doesn't resize his pictures very often on this forum. Marco’s Brutal Girlz site does produce pictures at 1600x1200. However the rest of his sites are still only at 1200x900, which is still a good resolution, but not big enough to need resizing.
I don't think it would result in a massive increase in bandwidth if you increased the limit. Looking at what’s posted here at the moment, I’m think higher resolution pictures would account for a small proportion of the traffic, and only have a small effect on bandwith.
Still, thanks for considering the issue, at least, anyway.

Heh, heh....the 'Dribble' was wholly accidental....just a typo...promise...:)
Appreciate your POV - and your commitment to quality...I discussed it with John - sure, there are all kinds of things that can be done, but, John has to draw lines somewhere - after all, this is not a commercial site - its his gift to us.
Cheers.

DU007 is much better at explaining things than me, but my short answer was, I see the browser stats of the people that come here and less than 1% of them would be seeing those pictures without scrolling the windows a decent amount..
We could do it and it's not that big a bandwidth deal since there aren't THAT many producers silly enough to produce pictures that big for no real reason...there just aren't enough people out there that it makes sense for...and you'd be screwing non-hi-speed modem users completely..
Dibble, if you have Photoshop, I guarantee I can resize the pics to the limit losing no perceptible quality...send them to me and I'll put them side by side..
Out for the night!
