Greatest Rock Group of All Time...

okay it might sound a little juvenile as a topic but what the hell, beats talking about the muslims again.

Okay I'm gonna go with the obvious choice here not because it is so obvious but because I am that much of a fan of their music. How can you possibly nominate anyone else but the Beatles as the greatest of all time?

Stay on Topic folks

Hard to argue with The Beatles in terms of greatness i.e. popularity, number of hit singles etc but my own favourite rock band of all time is The Who.

The Beatles. Really, that's all there is to it. Anyone else, you'd have to say, "yeah, but what about the Beatles?"

I alway said that if all I ever did in my life was write "Elenor Rigby", I would still consider myself a great songwriter. And they have a hundred songs that good.

The thing that amazes me is that they went from "Love me Do" at the start, to "A Day in the Life" towards the end-- and they did it all in SEVEN YEARS. Think about it-- every Beatles song you ever heard was written between 1963 and 1970. It takes Boston that long to decide on a producer...

I'd understand if they aren't your favorite band; that's fine. But anyone who argues against them being the greatest (most importaint, biggest, best) is going to hear from me telling you you're wrong. It's like saying the USA isn't the best democracy...

Have you heard of a band called The Gentrys Keep on Dancing. They were the only US band to knock The Beatles off the top spot.
Anyway my favorite bands are Europe,Chicago and Def Leppard.

I knew I liked this guy for a reason. Keith Moon was something else as a drummer. I still think Quadrophenia was their best album.

Think about it-- every Beatles song you ever heard was written between 1963 and 1970. It takes Boston that long to decide on a producer...

LOL isn't that the truth

I'm a HUGE music fan.

With that said I'm NOT a pariculary huge Beatles fan.

My choice for best rock band ever would be Alice in Chains.

They could do it all metal, grunge, acid rock.

There'll never be a better duo then Staley and Cantrell.

Biggie

who is that?

Deep Throat Diva

you want me to tell you, or stay on topic?

Because Biggie is considered by many (not me) as the greatest rapper that ever lived.

you might remember his feud with tu-pac? East vs west?
Eh...nevermind.

Stick to the Rolling stones and Led zeppelins. :D

But I guess I can start up a thread about that after this thread is exhausted.:D

Pink Floyd

However if you consider all kinds of bands then…

Dire Straits (almost all songs)
Enigma (almost all songs)
Scorpions (Many songs)
Chris De Burgh (quite a few songs)
Madonna (have the same opinion or not … a true talent!!)
The Cranberries (some songs)

And some already mentioned! :)

HerOttoman
03-09-2006, 8:27 AM
Ugggh... I know I am opening a can of worms here, but he likes pink floyd AND dire straits... what a coincidence. Are you one of the people who said Nirvana was too depressing and negative? Or were they just making noise?

And come on-- Chris F****G DeBurgh? Ugh.

I'll give you credit for Scorpions, if you exclude anything they did after 1983, which famously was the year "Heavy Metal" became "metal", and everything went to hell...

Well, there's no accounting for tastes...

Well I like Dire Straits and Nirvana! :D

Nirvana are another of my favourite bands of all time - Bleach and Nevermind are two of the best albums I've ever heard, both examples of those rare albums where every track is great.

I'm also a big fan of The Jam - IMO Paul Weller is up there with Lennon and Mcartney as one of the all time great singer/songwriters.

Whether either of these bands could be classed as rock bands is open for debate though - Nirvana more metal/grunge perhaps (what the hell does "grunge" mean anyway??) and The Jam mod/punk. Not that I really care about genres - I like stuff from all sorts. If it sounds good then I'm happy!

Mistress Sara

Nirvana..gotta love that music. Too bad kurt's wife killed him...he was so hot! Not all of his music is depressing...geesh!

One thing that I am happy about, I like all music (except country and rap) and I never got "stuck" like so many people have....They just won't let go of the 70's or the 80's. There is a lot of good music out there.

Still thinking of best of all time though...

Guess what kens favorite all time song is?

"Muskrat Love" by Captain and Taneil.

The funny thing is he so hates when I put lame songs in his head. All I have to do is sing two words of the song and he's like grabbing his ears and starts doing the "la la la, I can't hear you" It's pretty entertaining... so tell him that you like that song too. :evillaugh

fyi: this is for My entertainment..I owe him one and he knows how much I like enjoy annoying him with stuff like this.

Everybody knows it's The Beatles. They are the standard by which all others are judged. their stuff never gets old. They have fans that range in age from seven to seventy. Pretty much any person you meet could name ten Beatles songs. Could you say that of any other group?

I'll catch heat for this BUT I'd much rather see a Pantera show if I could go back in time than a Beattles.

I dig Zepplin, AC/DC and Sabbath for my old school brit(and Aussie/Scottish) rock.

I think this is a great topic, maybe juvenile, but I'm a kid at heart. :)

I think the greatest rock band as judged by many would be the Beatles. Although when I think of "pure" rock n' roll...the Rolling Stones also come to mind. Have they even been mentioned yet?

As judged by me, it's so hard to decide. If I had to make one choice it would be Led Zeppelin. Their rock is a little harder and more soulful to me than the rest. Their string of hits speaks volumes, but I'm more impressed at how many albums of theirs don't have any "skipable" tracks. It's like each album is a mini "best of" disc.

I'm genre-bending for some of my honorable mentions. Here goes:

Allman Brothers Band
Dave Matthews Band
Jimi Hendrix Experience
Grateful Dead
Pink Floyd
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Metallica

B@stard. What song was in my head when I woke up this morning? Sick. Really.

ON topic.

What’s the best band ever? I don’t know. I’m a lot like Ms Sara. My tastes keep moving. If I’ve heard a song a million times I’m usually done with it unless there’s been a significant amount of time since I’ve heard it.

However, last time we all were in San Diego on a vaca, our traveling friend (heh heh) had an iPod filled with bands covering Queen music. And it hit me: this music is great in a way little else is. News of the World, Night at the Opera, great albums (that’d be vinyl disks for you youngins). Any way you want to slice it, it’s just all good. Classic. Even their silly little stuff like Bicycle Race is darn good. I really could hear that stuff another million times. If that doesn’t mean the band was great then I don’t know what the definition is.

Current rotation of music includes:

Franz Ferdinand (!!!)
Death Cab For Cutie
Black Eyed Peas (heee heee)
Kaiser Chiefs
Foo Fighters
Moby
Panic! At The Disco (don’t get funny folks)
She Wants Revenge
The Bravery
The Killers (very good band – very creative)
Yellowcard (trendy, but they do alright)
(Late edit: ) Queens of the Stone Age

Song titles available upon request. Some good stuff going on recently. Keep It Fresh, yo.

What does anyone think of Oasis? IMO their early stuff was awesome but they've gone downhill since. Definitely Maybe is another one of the best albums of all time for me, with every single song a fantastic one. They've never reached those heights again.

The Zephyr song
Other side
Can't stop
By the way
Under the bridge
Californication
Scar tissue
etc.
In every songs, there is always a story, I think the story of this song up there is when the dad of this band's singer pay him a prostitute when he was very young. Just because he judges that was the time that he become a man.
Like I say I'm not sure if this song tell about that story but this story really happen.

Well, Invité, put it this way: how many bands are there where I could actually remember the names of a random list of their songs? (not many) Each of your listed RHCP songs is one I can rememer name and tune and lyrics. I think that also is a measure of a great band. They stick in your head in a good way.

OK, maybe I was a bit harsh...

jim-- As a 38 year old living in the Detroit area, you may be suprised to hear that The Jam is my second favorite band ever. Same general idea as the Beatles-- soooo many great songs, even if the only one you ever hear around these parts are "Town Called Malice" -- and only once in a blue moon, on the oldies show... it's sad, really. Would it kill them to play "Ghosts"? Or "I Got By In Tme"? They are every bit as relevant now as they were then, and that 60 bucks I thew at the boxed set was the best money I ever spent. Long live PAUL! ( I could go on like this for hours, mate.)

Ken- you're are right about Queen. You can put them in the same catagory as The Jam, Thin Lizzy, and Areosmith-- that is, GREAT bands from the 70's who have 20 more fantastic songs for every one they play on classic rock radio. (Which inherently sucks, not only for that reason, but just because of the name-- even though they never palyed them once, how can The Ramones NOT be classic rock?)

This is a partial list of what I have played in the last 24 hours, and then you can all decide if I know what I'm talking about:

ROXY MUSIC- Country Life

URBAN DANCE SQUAD- Mental Floss For The Globe

THE BLACK KEYS- The Big Come Up

DINOSAUR JR.- Where You Been

TODD RUNDGREN- A Wizard, A True Star

HOLLY AND THE ITALIANS- The Right to be Italian

MATTHEW SWEET- 100% Fun

BAD BRAINS- I Against I

RIDE- Going Blank Again

THE JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE- Electric Ladyland

BIG SUGAR- Heated

KEN STRINGFELLOW- Soft Commands

And JOHNNY CASH- American Recordings (playing now).

LOTS of music in this household...

It's hard to pin point one band. I suppose that the majority would say the Beatles..errrrrr.. they were fine I guess and yeah, everyone knows their songs.

The Rolling Stones (I can't believe Mick is still dancing about)

I actually know the woman that he wrote about "Angie" She proved it with a photo of them both..kinda interesting and fun.

Too many to decide from. I am going to say the Beatles.

Jesus H. Christ...how could I forget the Doors?! Thanks for bringing them up DU.

This could be another thread...but if I could go back in time, out of all the classic rockers I never got to see and never will see in concert (in their original form), the Doors are who I'd most like to see. Of more recent bands, Alice in Chains tops my list.

underneath1: Moody Blues aren't rock. They do not "rock" in the slightest bit, any more than Roberta Flack does. Yes and Rush kind of fit in the same mold-- Art Music for sensitive math geeks. Music for the consumption of musicians. They aren't even the best prog-rock bands, anyway...

BlackSwirl: Good idea, but what if you went through all that trouble to biuld a time-machine, harnessed the energy to travel through time, and paid your cover charge only to find out you were unlucky enough to see The Doors play one of THOSE shows that night? You know, the 20 minute set of Jim being so wasted he couldn't stand up straight, let alone remember the words? Bet that would suck. That's why I wouldn't put Hanoi Rocks on the list, either.

In no order:

The Jam, Hammersmith Odeon, ca. 1981
Motorhead, Hammersmith Odeon, 1980.
Rory Gallagher, anywhere,1982.

And of course,

The Woodstock Music and Art Festival, 1969.

But honestly, some of the shows I HAVE seen would make the list, too...

Maybe the above mentioned groups don't fit YOUR description of rock music or even good progressive rock but I'll bet there are many people on this forum who never rushed out to buy albums by the jam, rory gallagher or motorhead either.

Yeah, I forgot about the Doors also. I enjoy todays music like anyone else, and I have a different fav. band like every other month. I just think the classic stuff, Like Led Zep, Doors, Floyd, Hendrix, even Black Sabboth for the beginnings of Heavy Metal. (and) yes the Beatles and Stones (although I wasn't deeply into either band)They paved the way for everyone today. I don't think there will be any band of todays(or tomorrows) bands that can even touch them. Long after Robert Plant has moved on, your still going to hear him on Radio stations everywhere. The music will turn over to a new generation of listeners. I have a hard time believing my kids kids will be listening to 50 cent, or even know who he is for that matter.

I agree Sinbad, there is lots of good new music around but even then I find it proves so much that my 18year old nephew and niece will sit astounded watching a dvd of zeppelin or floyd or neil young. They have their modern stuff but they cannot get enough of all the classic rock stuff - they realise just how awesome it was.
Don`t get me wrong,I don`t live in a time warp - I`ve seen the Kaisers in concert and Moby among others. They are very good at what they do,whether it stands the test of time, who knows.
Look AT THE CLASS STUF THAT CAME FROM THE FIFTIES - IT`S STILL HERE,STILL PLAYED,good music, played with fire and passion will always last.

Underneath1-- OK, I am really sorry about that. I won't do it again.

I guess I am having a little problem with the actual rules. I know this isn't a "flame pit", (and since that really wasn't in anyway a flame, I am not feeling guilty about posting it), and after being called every name in the book there, I don't want to hang out with that mindset anyway. So I will err on the side of caution henceforth.

What I want to know is, at what point will expressing my opions cross over into being critical? It seems all I need to do is disagree, and this somehow makes me an "eliteist". (For the record, I listen to just about every single band anyone has mentioned to this point, and I certainly don't consider myself a snob. Heck, I even posted a list of recent listenings to let YOU folks decide. As a group.) If I just should agree with everyone, I don't see it as much of a discussion. Or is it "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all?" Or is Roberta Flack the only one who is not off limits? Do we need your approval before we joke about a band?

Please don't take what I said as a personal attack-- that was not the point I was making; but unless you are related to one of the Moody Blues, it sees like an overreaction to threaten me with removal, even if we are all playing by your strict rules.

Once again, I am sorry if I offended, and look forward to clarification. Or maybe I've pissed you off, and this is my last post...

the difference would be an example like this:

1) I don't think the moody blues have ever recorded anything that would qualify them in the least as a rock band

2) I think the moody blues are Art Music for sensitive math geeks

now remember, some posts had already mentioned that they liked the moody blues music.
by the implication of your comment, the people here who have expressed a like for their music could be compared to, to use your phrase, "sensitive math geeks".

That's comes across like a personal insult.

to answer your question about what's the difference?

negative comments that give the impression of being aimed at the character of a person are not welcomed here.

negative comments that seek to counter the other person's views without having to attack any personal aspect of the poster ARE welcomed here.

Let's use this as an example: Let's say someone brought up Iraq and WMD's in a post and you replied....

right example: "I don't know why you keep saying Bush lied to us about WMD's in Iraq. Here is a link that shows he was correct."

wrong example: "anyone that still believes Bush lied to us about wmd's in Iraq must be an intellectual moron"

That would be taken by most normal people as a personal attack

Unfortunately I did get the impression you were referring to me (and whoever else liked the moody blues' music) as a geek.

and no you didn't piss me off. And I don't recall threatening to remove you over it so don't overreact yourself. I understand nobody's perfect.
I remembered from one of your recent posts how much you hated the atmosphere of the flame pit where people couldn't discuss something without it turning into a name calling fest so I was a little surprised to see that geek remark in your post.

Ok, I see your point. The fact that it was referenced previously was a key. After reading over again, I agree with you on that-- it could easily be construed as a personal attack, even though I was generalizing when I used the term "geek", and was not really refering to any of the cool people here who also happen to like that band. But I shouldn't have said it, and again, I'm sorry. Bigotry sucks, regardless of who it is directed at; this I should know by now.

Perhaps I am still feeling slightly defensive here, and I realize I should lose that ASAP. This is part of the healing process that will hopefully make me feel comfortable here again; there are bound to be some bumps along the way, but I think I should be trying as least as hard as the rest of you to speed it along. So thanks for the clarification, and I'm looking forward to future posts.

PS-- That link you mentioned? Where can I read it, without turning this into a politically oriented forum?

The Beatles are pretty legendary, and they had a lot of impact on their time. I mean shit, some of their songs are being played by jazz musicians.
That being said, my favorite band is Led Zeppelin. In my opinion they had the best bass and guitar player, John Paul Jones and Jimmy Page, Robert Plant could sing anything, and John Bonham was one of the best drummers. The thing that gets me about this band is their versatility. They went through so many phases and different types of rock, and they blew through them all. For me it doesn't get any better than their early heavy blues rock. My favorite album is the BBC Session 2 Disc set.

LOL Bonham, John Bonham golferguy. Honest mistake though. Look what board your on, of course its on your mind. :D I agree with everything you say. The Brits have a lot to take credit for. A lot of good music comes from across the pond.

Heheh, must've been the subconscious speaking...

What about new rock bands? Does anyone else thing Audioslave is really solid? There's a few songs on their newest album that are just amazing.

I know this thread is about rock groups, but I'm just going to go on record here and say Hendrix was the shit. It's doesn't get much better than his acoustic cut of Angel.

Also, a relatively new band that at first I had a hard time taking seriously, just because of who the frontman was, is Tenacious D. I thought it seemed juvenille, but that is a really good band. They did a cover of Pinball Wizard by The Who, and it sounds really good. Even though their original stuff can get a bit off the wall, the music is really good if you listen.

I do like Elton John's music sometimes.
But I prefer Europe or anything rock n roll.

Greatest rock group of all time? Hard to say (Beatles were a pop band in my opinion, not a rock group )

My selection would be the Tubes (and I do mean the music, not because of the stage show )

And to mention a few others; Rolling Stones, Led Zep.. Roxy music, Stooges, Who, Golden Earring, Hawkwind, amboy Dukes, New york Dolls, Blue Oyster Cult, Split Enz, Doctor of Madness, Chrome, Fancy..

Lots of these groups are "greatest" at some of their greatest moments

Beatles were a pop band in my opinion, not a rock group

good point but certainly during their "beatlemania" years of 64 - 66, there weren't ANY rock groups around as popular music hadn't reached that stage of development yet

But RUSH is the greatest band of all time...any naysayers should be beaten with a rolled up newspaper...

I'm happy to see others appreciate Rush as well. They were without a doubt, my favorite band in high school/college. For some reason I just kinda lost interest in them when they released the album AFTER "Moving Pictures"

I'll always have a special place in my heart for the first concert that I passed out in from smoking too much dope. (Exit Stage Left" tour 1981

Rush? That’s funny. I was a big rush fan in late high school.

But I hadn’t thought about them for years. So the coincidence of this reference to Rush surprised be because just last weekend I was talking with the bf of Sara’s and my (female) friend, and we ended up having about a 10 minute convo about Rush and how much we’d liked the band – and he’s 11 years younger than me!. He’d even gone to a concert a few years back. I never had, so I was envious.

Speaking of RUSH. I had a boyfriend in school who played in a band...all they did was Rush. After drinking and smokin' a bit, they sounded real good! (of course, I never inhaled)
