The Waitress .
Maybe it was the afternoon drinking or the many many years of frustration and loneliness that spurred him into action that Autumn day but very occasionally he reckoned you were given an opportunity too great to pass up . Sometimes very rarely the planets aligned enough to give you a moment , a split second to make a decision , to throw yourself out there , into the abyss the unknown , leaving past regrets behind and allowing the chance to fall head first into future possibilities . To see whether you had what it took to take the chance that was presenting itself , seize it and then let the cards fall where they may . The idea itself was nothing new to him but acting upon it was a positively alien concept but now he had made his decision nothing was going to stop him . It was with this sudden clarity that he thrust his hand out into the path of the passing waitress .
His realisation was quickly replaced by a jarring bolt of pain that ran all the way through his hand and travelled up his arm as her foot connected perfectly with his outstretched fingers . All the years of dreaming had come to this and his timing and precision were nothing if not spectacular . The pain was unlike any he had ever experienced before , this time it was mixed with a thrill he hadn't known could exist , it heightened his senses , made him feel so alive , he had to bite his lip to avoid crying out with the hurt but mostly with the joy that finally a beautiful young woman had stepped on him even if she had been unaware she was going to do so .
High above him the waitress had seen his hand appear only a fraction of a moment before her foot crunched down upon it , her momentum allowing her no time to stop knowing what was about to happen but having no control over it . She looked down concerned and surprised that she had just roughly walked on another persons hand wondering how it had suddenly arrived before her as she was clearing the tables after the busy lunch rush . She was glad that this had happened in the quieter section of the restaurant where the room cut round in an L shape , she got the idea that standing on the customers possibly wasn't in the job description . She bent down to see a man maybe in his late thirties slowly crawling out from beneath the table , she could see tears almost welling up as he briefly glanced up but then his eyes went back down and remained fixed on her shoes , he began to rub his hand but was obviously in no immediate hurry to get up . If anyone else had been witness they would have sworn that it looked like he was almost relishing his position on the floor basically one step away from literally grovelling at her feet .
“ I'm really sorry , are you all right ? “ she asked him as she slowly helped him up “ That must have really hurt , I'm amazed you didn't cry out “
He continued to gently stroke his hand but once again to anyone else watching this would have come across as if he was trying to trace where her foot had once been and where he wished it still was rather than any real attempt to soothe his pain . He seemed reluctant to meet her eyes as he answered .
“ No , well a little bit , I'm fine though , my own fault for crawling around on the floor really “
“ Okay then , are you sure you're all right though ? I seem to have scraped your hand up a bit , the soles of my shoes are a little rough I'm afraid , don't think they were made with stepping on peoples fingers in mind “ she flashed the man a cute little smile that he didn't catch which seemed to magnify the instant regret she felt from trying to make a joke out of the situation , sure that he would be off to find her boss post haste and report her carelessness , maybe even get her fired , she loved working here it was helping her get through university and today was to be her first chance to lock up after the others left , a position of responsibility she had worked hard to attain . Amazingly to her surprise he did no such thing but actually apologised to her instead .
“ No really my fault totally , I'm sorry to have put you through that “ he continued to look at her feet , his next words surprised even himself , they seemed to just flow out of him , his voice disregarding any idea of better judgement “ Your shoes are very nice by the way , you look lovely in them , if anyone was going to step on my hand by accident I'm glad it was such a beautiful young lady as yourself “
He looked up eventually and met her gaze and saw the relieved yet puzzled look on her face , this really wasn't going as she had expected , she'd anticipated trouble at the very least but now here he was complimenting her shoes and giving her the impression that he was practically happy that she had walked all over his hand . It was sweet really how he was trying to be all cool about it she thought , he came across well enough , a little shy and awkward perhaps and the way he spluttered out his words in a rush as if he was glad to be rid of them was kind of amusing , but he was obviously a nice guy and she felt a little bad that she had expected worse of him . She looked at him , saw his flushed face and behind the obvious pain and embarrassment she thought she caught a look of hope and pleasure that he'd never been able to extend to anyone before . She shrugged the feeling off , her ability to read people had never been a strong point and her relief was stronger than whatever she believed she might have seen in his expression , besides she didn't want to admit to herself her true feelings , the little shiver of excitement she'd felt as she'd felt his hand beneath her foot , fascinated seeing afterwards how her shoe had marked him leaving her footprint on his skin , imagining how much pressure she must have exerted to have done that . She attempted to deny to herself the fact that she'd actually trodden on another human being and part of her had definitely enjoyed it . She was slightly shocked at herself and was hoping that it was just a weird reaction to the stresses and strains of her everyday life . She helped him sit back down then walked away trying to shake those odd feelings as she went over to the bar to get him another drink by way of apology .
