imo smilies should be fun, teasing, sarcastic, etc.
They ad an expression of emotion to a thread or a respond.
Smilies like :heil: don't belong on a public board. They are extreme, offensive, degrading and hurt a lot of people
my 2 cents.

although he wasnt a nice guy 2 say the least.. the media has many many times made hitler into a joke...i hardly think that smiley can be taken seriously.
I feel I have to agree with doo_step on this one. There are plenty of other smileys, and I (and maybe more people) can't laugh at this particular one.
Hitler was a puke sonofabitch...we don't want to forget he existed, we want to remember that assholes like that are around and be ever vigilant...

what doorstep + satch mean is: hitler is nothing one could laugh about. what is this smiley supposed to express? probably people will start to use it as an insult, and that would change hitler from a horrific historical fact to a mascot of evil. i agree that this is not funny.
Hmmmm....well, I think I can see some cultural differences here....
In America, Hitler is considered a complete fuckface, but we don't fear the memory or try and hide his existence. I can understand that Europeans may be more sensitive about him...
What does everyone think? Hitler emoticon stay or Hitler emoticon go? Those who have already posted need not post again...

keep the son of bitch ,he still keeps writing world history even in these days so let him be with us so we can make fun of the nazi-bastards. hiding from it is not the way to fight assholes like nazis."European who easily can speak about hitler"

John, you’re (almost) completely right.
The fact I said this about the smily, has nothing to do with trying to forget him or ignore him; nor has it anything to do with forgetting or ignoring his ideas: on the contrary !!
Non of us all should ever forget that great evil.
The thing is that people (and specially perhaps younger people without real history knowledge {yes they do exist} would be using this smily to express certain emotion, but without realizing what they REALY express.
So, it’s not the remembrance, but what people actually express when they use this symbol. It’s definitely a very extreme insult and act of extreme violent confrontation to the one it’s addressed to.
Using this symbol, means one identifies him or herself with it!!
It's a disgusting thing and a disgusting way of thinking.
Specially in times when everyone is speaking about a war on terrorism; this was a kind of terrorism now one wants to endure again.
And believe me, when someone would actually use this in direct confrontation to me, it would bring out my strongest aggression and I would…………. no, I hope I made my point; lets keep it nice here.
my 2 cents

Just to use the Hitler smiley in a funny way, or in a way to express some humor on this board is to trivialize the 12 million people that lost their lives because of him and his kind.
You can do better than that! Looses it! :(

No disrespect intended, but if you've chosen to be offended, you have nobody to blame but yourself. Think about it: it's not a big deal unless you make it one.
I did not 'chose' to be offended, but Hitler (and anyone who supported him) was responsible for killing most of my family. I guess what John said was right, there is a cultural difference here: if I would make a 'funny' icon showing a plane flying towards the Twin Towers that wouldn't be appreciated I guess.

Honestly I didn't know that smily was representing Hitler.
I just though it was a funny face beating his hand on a table
simply meaning someone who wants to get attention ironically
For my opinion John you should remove it straight away if one only person here should be offended by this image if it has something to do with Hitler.
I agree totally there isn't anything funny and to joke about it
So please John remove it.As you said here in Europe we are much more sensitive about this subject.

Hitler and WWII was responsible for the death of over 60 million people including his own people so it's safe to say he affected pretty much every country on the planet. You can't compare this icon to planes flying into a building, you can however compare it to bin laden. The icon is intended to make fun of hitler not praise him, such as a bin laden icon would.

John,
Just my opinion for what it's worth. When I first saw that smiley several days ago, I suspected there would be trouble. It didn't bother me personally but I knew it would bother many Europeans, especially Germans. For this very reason, I feel that it should be dumped. In short, we don't need something that trivializes what he did to remember him by. Turbs already mentioned this but it would be similar to making an OBL smiley - I think more of us Americans could relate to this the way most Germans relate to Hitler. True, they're all "fuckfaces", so should we make "Charles Manson" smileys, maybe "Wash DC area sniper" smileys?
I'm not that politically correct but I think this smiley should be deleted, mainly out of consideration for our German friends.

I tend to agree with the notion that it should be removed, even if only one person should find it offensive.
I, like others on this forum, am not remotely PC and it takes a lot to offend me, but we should be able to respect the feelings of others, we don't really gain anything by keeping this "smiley", but it's possible we might lose a few friends.

Point taken Satch. I understand your reasoning. Thanks.

Hey guys....Even though I personally don't find the Hitler smiley to be offensive, I think enough of our Euro friends do that warrant it's removal. The comparisons given don't hold much water, but the feelings behind them are enough...I'm ditching it...

Well, so much for my Idi Amin smiley I was working on! lol
No, seriously I wasn't over-offended by the hitler, but if enough are, its best to dump it!
I agree with the "lets not make him a mascot of evil" comment made earlier.
I wouldn't want to see a kkk smiley, or a smiley representing any hate group, but that just me.
Peace
