I think Tad has explained nicely what the general drive is, and I agree that there is some overlap with things like golden and brown showers. But there is certainly a difference in terms of sensation - farts are mostly smell oriented while GS and BS often involve consumption and are definitely much stronger in terms of smell. For some it may be a simple as the strength of the sensation: for example you might like lavender in your room, but you might be repulsed if the walls are soaked with it... So in this case farts would be sort of a happy medium.

For myself, I find it pretty difficult to 'explain' the fetish as Mistress Yuliya points out. Seems like almost any explanation I come up with is inadequate. I don't think there is just one explanation. Some find it inexplicably erotic, some find it humorous/shocking. Personally, I think of it as natural. This seems odd considering the vast majority of humanity is programmed to think that farts smell nasty and are inappropriate. The fart fetish must not be THAT uncommon though, just look at the number of sites catering to it. Consider the animal kingdom for a minute. Almost all mammals communicate with each other via smell, and a lot of times that smell comes from the anus. I think farts emit more than just gaseous waste; I think pheromones are released with the fart. While we as humans don't really need to rely on scents for communication anymore, it doesn't mean we've lost that ability. Fart fetishists aren't turned on by every single fart they smell or hear; they have preferences for certain aromas and qualities. Perhaps farts with these preferred qualities contain pheromones that "turn on" certain brain functions, so to speak. I don't want to make any claims that fart-sniffing helps humans find the right mate or something like that, all I'm trying to say is that there MIGHT be a scientific (perhaps evolutionary) reason behind the fart fetish.

Wonderful explanation and perspective.
