Canada will be the best country in the world in which to do business over the next half decade, according to a new report from the Economist Intelligence Unit.

Canada moved up three spots on the list from a 1998-2002 ranking, as the United States tumbled out of the top rung to fifth position.

The Netherlands held steady in second position, while Finland moved up five positions to third. The United Kingdom came fourth, down one from the Economist's last ranking.

The research group gave Canada high marks for the quality of its infrastructure, open regime for foreign trade and capital, and favourable market opportunities.

"Canada stands to benefit from improvements to its tax regime and its political environment," the Economist Intelligence Unit said.

"Despite pressure on public finances, the Canadian government will be able to implement the remaining elements of a tax-cutting package," the research group said.

In addition, the defeat of the Parti Quebecois by the Liberal Party in April's Quebec's provincial election in April "should end speculation about a third referendum on independence and signal the start of a new era for the territory's relations with the rest of Canada."

The research group dropped the ranking for the United States by four spots, due to "increased exposure to geopolitical risk, major imbalances in the economy, and weakening public finances."

This Unit talked about the “implementation of the rest of the tax cuts” This is what Mr. Bush is fighting for over here, which is being opposed by our “liberal” party. Mr. Bush wants to speed up these tax cuts.

Also, from reading their site, they are “forecasting” where the best investments will go. Guess what? There is no empirically proven way to predict exactly where the “winners” are going to be.

Mad cow/sars. ONE damn cow in alberta was hit by mad cow.. and guess what we DID suffer from that, but it just happened a few months ago!! 9-11 happened almost 2 years ago. Am sure that the beef ban by the US will be lifted well before 2 years come up.

And there is no comparison between Sars and 9-11.. there just cant be. 9-11 killed more than 2000 people, INCLUDING many Canadians! Sars is a god damn disease, sooner or later a cure will be found for it, and besides it has be contained and WHO announced that Toronto was SARS free, it didnt even last 2 months!! again 9-11 is about 2 years old now! and the US is still suffering the consequences.

Besides, you missed the point. I was not comparing us to the States, was simply showing how badly our country is being run. Being that we were rated number 1 and all. If the States were on full throttle we'd be #2, so we're doing pretty damn good. 9/11 or not if we had such a bad government we wouldn't even be in the top 10.
